AAIB Probes Ryanair Flight That Landed in Manchester With Minutes of Fuel

UK investigators are examining how the jet came to land below final fuel reserves.

Overview

  • Flight FR3418 from Pisa to Glasgow Prestwick, operated by Malta Air for Ryanair, diverted on October 3 after failed approaches in severe weather linked to Storm Amy.
  • The Boeing 737-800 (registration 9H-QBD) made multiple go-arounds at Prestwick, attempted Edinburgh, then landed in Manchester about 110 minutes after the first aborted approach.
  • crew declared a fuel emergency — issuing a “fuel Mayday” and broadcasting Squawk 7700 — and requested priority handling before landing.
  • The aircraft touched down with roughly 220 kg of fuel remaining, estimated at five to six minutes of flying time and below typical final reserve requirements.
  • Ryanair says it reported the incident and is cooperating with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, which is gathering evidence on fuel planning and diversion decisions.
