AAI to Submit Site Report for Bengaluru’s Second Airport Within Days

The state will place the assessment before the Cabinet, with any new airport opening only after May 2033.

Overview

  • An AAI expert team inspected three locations in April, including two sites off Kanakapura Road and one on the Nelamangala–Kunigal road.
  • Minister M. B. Patil said the AAI may recommend multiple sites, and airport developers will conduct separate financial and operational evaluations before committing.
  • A binding clause bars operation of another airport within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport until May 2033, guiding the project timeline.
  • Construction of a large airport typically takes five to six years, and the state aims to begin groundwork so a new facility could be ready after the restriction lifts.
  • Capacity pressures at KIA—projected to reach 80–90 million passengers by decade’s end—are driving the push, with political inputs ranging from south Bengaluru options to a Tumkur proposal and awareness of Tamil Nadu’s Hosur plan.
