Overview

  • The Maharashtra Cabinet on June 3 approved transferring the Kurla Mother Dairy plot to the Dharavi rehabilitation scheme, expanding land for the redevelopment effort.
  • At a June 9 rally in Mulund, Thackeray warned he would block all relocations unless every Dharavi resident is guaranteed a 500 sq ft home in the settlement.
  • Under current rules, ground-floor settlers before January 1, 2000, qualify for free 350 sq ft units in Dharavi while those from 2000 to 2011 must purchase 300 sq ft homes outside for around Rs 2.5 lakh under PMAY.
  • Thackeray alleges prime public lands such as the Deonar dumping ground and salt pan sites are being handed over to the Adani Group at minimal cost, sidelining long-time residents.
  • The redevelopment, which began in January under an Adani–MSRA joint venture and aims for completion by 2032, still awaits GST exemptions and higher floor space index approvals as political pressure mounts ahead of BMC elections.
