  • The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry announced the rule on Saturday, September 19, and ordered oil marketing companies to require biometric Aadhaar authentication from October 1 for booking refills at the regulated subsidised price.
  • Government data show 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or about 89.9%, had completed biometric Aadhaar Authentication by September 19 while roughly 3.16 crore connections remained non‑compliant as of the September 14 e‑KYC cutoff.
  • Consumers who have not completed authentication can either finish free BAA at distributor offices, during delivery using biometric devices, or via OMC mobile apps to retain the subsidy, or register to buy cylinders at market price without subsidy in 5 kg or 10 kg sizes.
  • The ministry says the policy links each LPG connection to an Aadhaar‑verified person to stop diversion, remove duplicate or ineligible accounts, and ease a fiscal strain that left public OMCs with over Rs 62,000 crore in accumulated under‑recoveries as of August 31, 2026.
  • Outreach has run since October 2023 with messages, camps and distributor follow‑ups; consumers who risk losing subsidy should complete BAA before October 1 or use OMC digital channels and the LPG helpline 1800‑2333‑555 for help.
