A40 and A3 Closures at Kreuz Kaiserberg Begin This Week, With Rail Blockade to Follow

Officials urge detours with severe delays expected.

Overview

  • The A40 closes Jan. 7–12 between Kreuz Kaiserberg and Kreuz Duisburg toward Venlo, followed by an A3 shutdown Jan. 16–19 toward Arnhem between Kreuz Kaiserberg and Oberhausen-Lirich.
  • A two-week A40 closure runs Jan. 19–Feb. 2 between Kreuz Duisburg and Kreuz Kaiserberg toward Essen to reconfigure the work zone and resurface sections.
  • Rail traffic around Duisburg is blocked Jan. 9–Feb. 6, suspending direct Duisburg–Essen services and affecting 13 regional lines plus key ICE connections with detours and replacement buses.
  • The first A40 closure is tied to removing a support scaffold at the bridge where the A3 crosses the A40.
  • Autobahn GmbH’s long-running rebuild adds lanes, bridges and noise protection through 2031, with several A40–A3 ramps staying closed until at least mid‑2027 and signed red-dot detours in place.
