A3 Closure Near Duisburg Begins as A40 Shuts This Weekend to Open Three-Lane Section

The works pave the way for a traffic switch onto a new A40 alignment to expand capacity.

Overview

  • The A3 is closed in both directions between Kreuz Oberhausen-West and Kreuz Breitscheid from Friday, November 7, 21:00, to Monday, November 17, 05:00, with limited on-ramps at Duisburg-Wedau and Oberhausen-Lirich remaining available.
  • The A40 toward Essen is fully closed between Duisburg-Rheinhausen and Duisburg-Häfen from Saturday, November 8, 09:00, to Monday, November 10, 05:00, to implement a new traffic layout, with Deges aiming for a possible reopening late Sunday.
  • From Monday, November 10, 05:00, traffic on the affected A40 stretch is expected to run on three lanes after Autobahn GmbH approved the new section, with a later closure still planned to shift Venlo-bound traffic by mid-December.
  • Detours are signposted via the A57 and A42, and the Duisburg-Rheinhausen off-ramp remains accessible during the A40 shutdown.
  • The A45 at Autobahnkreuz Westhofen faces full night closures for drilling and repairs on November 7–8 and November 20–21, with ramp restrictions and a detour via the A1 junction Hagen-Nord, while several A40–A3 connectors stay closed until about mid‑2027.
