A24 Alone Earns ‘Good’ Grade as LGBTQ Representation in Studio Films Falls to 23.6%

GLAAD’s report highlights the near-invisibility of transgender roles as a wake-up call for more authentic LGBTQ storytelling.

Overview

  • LGBTQ-inclusive films fell to 23.6% of major studio releases in 2024, down from 27.3% in 2023 and 28.5% in 2022.
  • A24 was the only studio to earn a “Good” rating with 56% of its films meeting GLAAD’s inclusion criteria.
  • Only two of the 250 films tracked featured transgender characters, while 37% of LGBTQ roles appeared for under one minute onscreen and just 27% had ten minutes or more of screen time.
  • Gender parity among LGBTQ roles was reached for the first time in five years with women at 50%, men at 48% and nonbinary characters at 2%, yet characters of color made up only 36% of representations, the lowest share since 2019.
  • No LGBTQ characters living with HIV appeared in any of the 250 films, underscoring persistent gaps in diverse storytelling.
