A2 Car Fire and A40 Crashes Disrupt Ruhr Traffic as Lanes Reopen Overnight

Police have opened an investigation into the A2 blaze after lanes reopened overnight.

Overview

  • Shortly after 22:00 Wednesday, a white BMW caught fire on the A2 near Herten and the driver pulled to the hard shoulder and escaped unharmed.
  • Fire crews closed the A2 toward Oberhausen to extinguish the blaze, and the carriageway reopened shortly before midnight.
  • Around 19:30 on the A40 at the Friesenstraße ramp in Mülheim, two separate collisions occurred a few hundred meters apart.
  • Five occupants left their vehicles unaided, with three people sustaining minor injuries that were treated at Mülheim clinics.
  • The A40 toward Duisburg was fully closed during rescue, recovery and oil‑spill cleanup by a specialist contractor, and the scene was cleared later that night.
