Overview

  • On July 15 a family Fiat Panda stalled inside the Base tunnel on the A1 motorway near Barberino di Mugello and was struck from behind by a truck unable to brake in time
  • Grandparents Mauro Visconti (69), Zoila Basulto (65) and aunt Stephany Visconti (38) died on impact, while Silvana Visconti and her four-year-old daughter Summer were airlifted to Careggi and Meyer hospitals
  • Summer was declared brain-dead on July 17 at Meyer Hospital and her organs were explanted under authorization from the Florence guardianship court
  • Silvana Visconti was pronounced brain-dead on July 18 after neurological assessments at Careggi and subsequently died, completing the loss of all five family members
  • The 56-year-old truck driver of Moldovan origin is under investigation for vehicular homicide as authorities probe crash dynamics and tunnel breakdown safety procedures
