£96m Cocaine Seizure: Stornoway Skipper Among Arrested
Multinational operation targets crime group, UK identified as potential destination for some of the drugs.
- A 29-year-old skipper from Stornoway, Scotland, and two other British crew members were arrested after 1.2 tonnes of cocaine, worth £96m, was seized from a Spanish-registered yacht.
- The yacht was intercepted by the French navy 1,200 miles east of Martinique in the Atlantic on December 18.
- Five other people, including a 62-year-old British man and his 24-year-old son, were arrested in Spain in connection with the shipment.
- The operation was a multinational effort involving the National Crime Agency (NCA), Spanish Policia Nacional, French customs, the French Navy, and the Maritime Analysis and Operations Centre Narcotics in Lisbon.
- The NCA believes that some of the seized drugs were destined for the UK.
