95-Year-Old Holocaust and Chernobyl Survivor Fatally Struck by Van in Brooklyn

Mayya Gil, a Ukrainian immigrant and community figure, was killed while crossing the street near her home in Bensonhurst.

Mayya Gil, 95, who survived the Holocaust, the Chernobyl disaster, and the COVID-19 pandemic, was struck and killed by a van in Brooklyn last Thursday.
The incident occurred on Cropsey Avenue near 24th Avenue while Gil was crossing the street with her home health aide, who was hospitalized in stable condition.
The NYPD confirmed that the driver of the van was neither arrested nor charged following the accident.
Born in Ukraine, Gil relocated to Kyiv as a child to escape the Nazis, later immigrating to Brooklyn with her family after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.
A dedicated member of the Jewish Community Center in Bensonhurst, Gil was remembered by her family and neighbors as an active, kind, and generous figure in the community.
