Overview

• Galina Smirnova, 95, was arrested Tuesday and arraigned Wednesday on second-degree murder and fourth-degree weapon possession in the death of her 89-year-old roommate, Nina Kravtsov.
• A criminal complaint says Kravtsov was found late Sunday in their Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center room with fatal head wounds and blood throughout, with a wheelchair foot pedal recovered inside and another part found beneath the window.
• Prosecutors say staff saw Smirnova in the bathroom with blood on her gown and legs washing her hands, and a nurse had observed Kravtsov asleep less than an hour earlier.
• The judge did not order a mental health evaluation after the defense objected; Smirnova, who has dementia, was remanded without bail and is due back in court Friday.
