9.5-Foot Crocodile Lifted From Bullet Train Construction Pit Near Vadodara

The rescue highlights repeated crocodile incursions at worksites along the Vishwamitri river.

Overview

  • Construction workers reported the animal trapped on Monday in a nearly 30-foot-deep pillar trench at the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail site near Maretha, Vadodara.
  • Wildlife activist Hemant Vadhwana and a Gujarat forest team secured the 9.5-foot, roughly 150-kg crocodile and lifted it out with a hydraulic crane after about two hours.
  • The crocodile was handed over to the forest department following the extraction.
  • Vadhwana said this was the second recent rescue at the project site, which lies along a stretch known for a sizeable crocodile population.
  • Local reports described large crowds watching the lift, and police separately confirmed a fatal crocodile attack on a 15-year-old in neighboring Rajasthan in September.
