9/11 Victim Identified Over Two Decades Later Through Advanced DNA Technology

John Ballantine Niven, an insurance executive from Long Island, has been identified as the 1,650th victim of the 9/11 attacks, leaving approximately 1,103 victims still unidentified.

John Ballantine Niven, a 44-year-old insurance executive from Oyster Bay, Long Island, has been identified as the 1,650th victim of the 9/11 attacks, over two decades after the event.
Advanced DNA technology, including next-generation sequencing and mitochondrial DNA analysis, was used to identify Niven's remains, which were initially recovered in 2001.
Niven was a senior vice president at Aon Risk Services, working on the 105th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center at the time of the attacks.
He left behind his wife, Ellen, and their 18-month-old son, Jack, who have expressed gratitude for the identification and the ongoing efforts of the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Despite this breakthrough, the remains of approximately 1,103 victims, or 40% of those who perished in the attacks, remain unidentified.
