9/11 Victim Identified Over Two Decades Later Through Advanced DNA Technology

John Ballantine Niven, an insurance executive from Long Island, has been identified as the 1,650th victim of the 9/11 attacks, leaving approximately 1,103 victims still unidentified.

  • John Ballantine Niven, a 44-year-old insurance executive from Oyster Bay, Long Island, has been identified as the 1,650th victim of the 9/11 attacks, over two decades after the event.
  • Advanced DNA technology, including next-generation sequencing and mitochondrial DNA analysis, was used to identify Niven's remains, which were initially recovered in 2001.
  • Niven was a senior vice president at Aon Risk Services, working on the 105th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center at the time of the attacks.
  • He left behind his wife, Ellen, and their 18-month-old son, Jack, who have expressed gratitude for the identification and the ongoing efforts of the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
  • Despite this breakthrough, the remains of approximately 1,103 victims, or 40% of those who perished in the attacks, remain unidentified.
