9-Year-Old Dies After Hours in Hot Car at Galena Park Industrial Lot

The child's mother has been detained as investigators review potential charges in the death of the 9-year-old left in a vehicle that reached extreme temperatures.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez called the incident a "tragic situation," and he said it's yet another reminder "of how dangerous it is to leave unattended children in a vehicle for any amount of time."

Overview

  • The girl remained unattended in her mother’s car from about 6 a.m. until around 2 p.m. at an industrial complex parking lot along the Houston Ship Channel.
  • Deputies found the child unresponsive in the 1200 block of Mayo Shell Road at 3:15 p.m., and she was pronounced dead after being taken to LBJ Hospital.
  • The vehicle was backed into its spot with windows cracked and a sun visor in place, which may have obscured the girl from view and delayed detection.
  • Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said outdoor temperatures hit at least 97°F and warned that children’s core temperatures can escalate to fatal levels in minutes.
  • The mother, who works at the facility, was detained for questioning and authorities are determining whether to file charges in the case.
