A 9-year-old boy, Elyas Amyr Marshall-Rodriguez, was tragically killed after being run over by his school bus in Florida. The incident occurred when Elyas crawled under the bus to retrieve a football and the driver, unaware of his presence, started to drive away.
Elyas was a cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with lymphoma at the age of 2. He had recently gone into remission after a grueling journey of treatment.
The boy was a student at Lawton Chiles Elementary School and was well-loved in his community. He had dreams of becoming a professional football player.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. The bus driver, a veteran with over a decade of experience, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Elyas' family, raising over $20,000 so far. The family is also receiving support from the community, with over 100 people attending a vigil held in Elyas' honor.
