9 Killed, 32 Injured in Accidental Blast at Srinagar Police Station During Explosives Sampling

Investigators say unstable material seized in the Faridabad ‘white-collar’ module linked to the Red Fort case detonated during a mandated forensic procedure.

Overview

  • The explosion occurred around 11:20 pm Friday as police, FSL experts and a magistrate’s team were taking samples from seized explosives stored at Nowgam police station.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs and J&K DGP called it an accidental blast and reported nine dead and 32 injured, including FSL personnel, revenue officials, police and civilians.
  • The material had been transported from Faridabad as case property in the multi-state probe into an alleged Jaish-linked network involving doctors associated with Al-Falah University and tied to the Red Fort car blast.
  • Officials said the sampling involved part of about 360 kg recovered from Dr Muzammil Ganaie’s rented accommodation, with broader raids reporting seizures totaling roughly 2,900–3,000 kg of chemicals and bomb-making items.
  • Successive smaller blasts impeded rescue operations and severely damaged the police station; authorities have opened inquiries with central oversight, and forensic teams have returned to the site.
