8cm Nail Extracted from 7-Year-Old’s Brain in Lucknow Surgery

Doctors report no neurological deficits following the operation, forecasting a full recovery

Overview

  • On May 15 the girl fell while playing in Nawajpur village, Uttar Pradesh, driving an 8cm construction nail through her neck, jaw and into her brain.
  • A CT scan revealed the nail had penetrated the cranial cavity dangerously close to major arteries and entered via the lower jaw.
  • Dr. Vaibhav Jaiswal and Dr. Sameer Mishra led the May 16 operation at King George’s Medical University Trauma Center in Lucknow, using advanced surgical techniques to remove the nail.
  • Postoperatively she received ventilator support and remained under close observation for ten days to guard against swelling, infection and neurological complications.
  • The child was transferred to a general ward on May 29 fully conscious with no immediate neurological deficits and is expected to make a full recovery.
