8.6% of England’s Flood Defences Below Standard, Including Thousands High-Consequence

The Environment Agency reports intensified inspections with £108m redirected for repairs.

Overview

  • Newly published Environment Agency data show 8.6% of 98,466 defences in England fell below the required condition by 20 October, including about 6,500 classed as high-consequence.
  • Wiltshire recorded 81 of its 881 assets below standard, with 55 designated high-consequence, equating to roughly 9%.
  • In the North East, 35 of 266 defences in County Durham (13%) and 14 of 139 in Darlington (10%) failed to meet the benchmark.
  • The Environment Agency says it completes up to 165,000 inspections a year and has redirected £108 million into repairs and maintenance.
  • The government cites a £10.5 billion programme running to 2036, and third‑party maintained defences fall short more often than EA‑maintained assets (104 per 1,000 versus 71).
