85-Year-Old German Dies in ICE Custody in Texas

An autopsy has been ordered; the case draws attention to a sharp rise in deaths in ICE custody, prompting oversight inquiries.

Overview

  • The man, identified in some reports as Adrian Andreas F., died on 24 June in a Harlingen, Texas, hospital where he had been treated since November for dementia, high blood pressure, cognitive problems and ulcers.
  • He had tried to enter the United States at the Colombia Solidarity Bridge in Laredo in late August 2025, was denied entry by Customs and Border Protection, referred to an immigration judge, and transferred to ICE custody on 29 August 2025 before moves to a rehabilitation facility on 1 October and to hospital on 4 November.
  • ICE said the detainee received close medical supervision up to his death, the German consulate and relatives were notified, and U.S. authorities ordered an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
  • Human-rights groups and media investigations report a marked increase in deaths in ICE custody since January 2025, with NGOs citing dozens of cases and alleging gaps in medical care and transparency.
  • The death is likely to increase pressure for independent oversight of detention medical care, raise questions about consular access and record-keeping, and prompt review actions by DHS inspectors and ICE internal oversight offices.
