82-Year-Overdue Library Book Displayed in San Antonio and Destined for Fundraising Sale

Returned under the fine-free policy, this vintage parenting guide is showcased through August before being sold to support library programs.

Overview

  • In June 2025 an Oregon resident known only as “PAAG” returned the guide after finding it among inherited belongings and traced its 82-year journey to a grandmother’s U.S. Embassy posting in Mexico City.
  • San Antonio Public Library abolished overdue fines in 2021 so the returner faced no charges despite the decades-long delay.
  • Library staff calculated that at a historic rate of three cents per day the unadjusted fine would have been about $896 (roughly ₹78,600) and could climb to around $16,000 when adjusted for inflation.
  • The vintage 1940s guide is on display in the Central Library lobby through the end of August, offering a glimpse into mid-century parenting advice.
  • After the exhibit the book will be donated to the Friends of SAPL and sold at the Book Cellar with proceeds supporting library programs.
