Under SAPL’s fine-free policy the vintage guide will be sold following its August display to fund library programs.

Overview

  • The parenting guide Your Child, His Family, and Friends by Frances Bruce Strain was borrowed in July 1943 and returned in June 2025 by an Oregon resident identifying as PAAG.
  • An anonymous letter explained how the volume traveled with the returner’s grandmother to Mexico City for U.S. Embassy work and resurfaced after the death of the returner’s father.
  • After eliminating overdue fines in 2021 SAPL waived any charge despite a stamped 3¢-per-day rate that equates to roughly $900 without inflation.
  • The book arrived in good condition and is on view in the Central Library lobby through the end of August to highlight a tangible link to mid-century family life.
  • Following the display period the volume will be donated to the Friends of SAPL and offered for sale in the Book Cellar with proceeds supporting library programs.
