82-Year-Old Found Dead After Car Plunges From Rhine Ferry Landing

Police are treating the incident as an accident with no evidence of foul play.

Overview

  • Witnesses at the Neuburgweier ferry ramp in Rheinstetten reported around 10:15–10:25 p.m. Saturday that a car rolled into the Rhine.
  • A large multi-agency search using boats, divers and a dive robot was hindered overnight by strong currents and darkness.
  • Rescuers located the submerged vehicle around 1 p.m. Sunday using sonar and a peilboot, then lifted it with a salvage ship and crane about an hour later.
  • The driver was found dead inside and was identified as an 82-year-old man reported missing earlier Saturday from Bad Bergzabern in Rhineland-Palatinate.
  • Investigators from the Offenburg police headquarters, water police and traffic accident unit are examining the circumstances, with no indication of additional occupants or third-party involvement and the exact cause still undetermined.
