80-Year-Old Drives Car Down Rome’s Spanish Steps at Dawn

It is the second such incident since a similar GPS-fueled descent three years ago.

Mitglieder der Feuerwehr stehen vor dem Auto eines 80-Jährigen, das in der Nacht auf der Spanischen Treppe von der Polizei gestoppt worden ist.

Overview

  • The 80-year-old driver stopped halfway down the 136-step monument after police intervention at around 4:30 AM.
  • The driver was uninjured, and his alcohol test returned negative.
  • Fire department crews used a large crane to remove the compact car from the landmark.
  • The Spanish Steps date to the 18th century and link Piazza Trinita' dei Monti with Piazza di Spagna.
  • In 2022 a 37-year-old man navigated the steps in a rented sports car, saying he was following GPS directions.
