80-Ton Drilling Rig Collapses Onto Yongin Apartment Building

Recovery crews began removing the stationary rig Friday morning ahead of a joint police and fire department investigation.

Overview

  • The rig toppled onto the building at 10:13 p.m. on June 5 at the Indeokwon–Dongtan double-track railway construction site in Seocheon-dong, Giheung District.
  • DL Construction said the 80-ton rotary drilling rig had been inactive since May 31 and was stationary when it collapsed.
  • No injuries were reported after authorities evacuated as many as 150 residents from the 15-story, 60-unit apartment block.
  • The impact shattered balcony windows and cracked sections of the outer walls on the 15th floor.
  • Emergency teams dispatched 38 personnel and 15 vehicles to secure the site and the municipal government provided temporary shelter at nearby community centers.
