8-Year-Old Maleeka ‘Mollie’ Boone Found Dead on Navajo Nation as Investigation Continues

Advocates are urging Arizonans to take Turquoise Alerts seriously.

Overview

  • Boone was last seen Jan. 15 between about 4 and 6 p.m. in the Coalmine NHA/Coalmine Canyon area near Tuba City, according to Navajo police.
  • A Turquoise Alert was issued early Jan. 16 and canceled later that day after the FBI confirmed her body was found and identified in Coalmine.
  • Tribal, state and federal agencies searched the area, including the Navajo Police, FBI, Arizona DPS, U.S. Marshals, Flagstaff Police and the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Navajo police placed the Coalmine community on lockdown until further notice and asked residents to remain at home while investigators work.
  • Authorities have not released the cause or circumstances of death, and the FBI and Navajo Police are seeking tips at 1-800-CALL-FBI or tips.fbi.gov, as advocates stress the alert system’s importance.
