79-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot by NYPD Queens Precinct After Refusing to Drop Gun

A 79-year-old man was fatally shot by NYPD officers Tuesday evening outside the 111th Precinct in Bayside, Queens, after he pointed a gun at police and ignored repeated commands to drop it.
The man, whose identity has not yet been released, approached the precinct, spoke to an officer, and then suddenly drew a loaded Cobra .38 revolver, according to police accounts.
Four officers fired their weapons after attempts to de-escalate the situation failed, striking the man multiple times; he was pronounced dead at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
The incident, captured on both body cameras and precinct surveillance footage, is under investigation by the NYPD’s force investigation division to determine further details.
This shooting marks the first fatal police shooting in New York City this year and occurred on the same day as another shooting involving an NYPD officer on the Lower East Side.
