71 Passengers Evacuated from Walt Disney World Monorail Following Flat Tire Incident

Monorail's sudden halt accompanied by a loud bang, flash of light, and smell of burning rubber, prompting about an hour and 20 minutes long evacuation operation by two fire departments; no injuries reported.

  • The monorail system at Walt Disney World Resort, which serves as transportation between various parks and hotels, experienced a flat tire causing it to halt abruptly. The incident occurred near the EPCOT parking lot toll plaza and was accompanied by a loud bang, a flash of light, and a smell of burning rubber.
  • A total of 71 passengers had to be evacuated from the suspended monorail. The furnace of the monorail also stopped working, prompting passengers to open the windows for ventilation until the fire departments arrived. The evacuation operation was carried out by two fire departments - the Reedy Creek Fire Department and the Orange County Fire Department, and lasted for approximately one hour and 20 minutes.
  • No injuries were reported from the incident. Compensation in the form of $200 in gift cards and Lightning Lane passes, which allow guests to bypass long lines for rides, were provided by Disney to the passengers.
  • The Epcot monorail line will remain closed until the problematic vessel is removed from the track. The monorail service, one of the iconic attractions at Disney World, was originally opened in 1971 with just Magic Kingdom and its adjacent hotel areas as stops. It was later extended to the EPCOT theme park in 1982.
  • This incident follows an event in October where a guest made headlines by jumping off a pedestrian bridge into a portion of Epcot's World Showcase Lagoon near the Italy pavilion of the park.
