70mph Gales Sweep England and Wales Under Met Office Warning

Forecasters flag a low risk of brief tornadoes in southern England during the current spell.

Overview

  • A 22-hour yellow wind alert remains in place until 6pm Monday, covering most of England and all of Wales after gusts spread inland overnight.
  • Inland gusts of 45–55 mph are expected widely, with 60–70 mph possible on exposed coasts and hills, strongest in west Wales and North West England this morning.
  • A large band of rain is crossing the country with blustery showers and isolated thunderstorms, raising the chance of surface-water issues on already wet ground.
  • Travel disruption is being reported with warnings for road, rail, air and ferry delays, brief power interruptions and large coastal waves; the M48 Severn Bridge was reported closed due to gales.
  • Winds are forecast to ease from the west later today and into the evening, with a brief calmer spell Tuesday before further unsettled weather is possible midweek.
