700-Year-Old City Church Tower Lifted 45 Feet as 50 Fenchurch Street Reaches Bottoming-Out Milestone

The medieval All Hallows Staining tower will be reinstated at ground level within a new public garden under a scheme targeting completion in 2028.

Overview

  • Engineers suspended the Grade I listed All Hallows Staining tower on stilts above a 60,000 sq ft excavation to safeguard it during deep basement works.
  • The project marked its bottoming-out after removing more than 125,000 tonnes of earth to prepare foundations for a new office skyscraper.
  • Axa IM Alts is delivering a 36-storey, roughly 650,000 sq ft development featuring a 360-degree public experience floor, roof garden, ground-floor retail and an underground livery hall.
  • Deputy mayor Howard Dawber attended the ceremony and called the scheme a significant milestone for the Square Mile.
  • The build has faced objections from Historic Royal Palaces over protected views and from Kuwait’s sovereign fund over light to the Willis Building, yet construction continues following City approval granted in 2020.
