7 Shot at Unofficial Prairie View A&M Homecoming Event, Security Protocol Not Followed

"Permit for event was granted on condition of adequate security measures, which were found to be not implemented; all seven victims were bystanders to a dispute and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, investigation ongoing."

  • The shooting occurred at a party near Prairie View A&M University during its homecoming weekend, hosted off the university campus, an event that normally receives more than a thousand attendees; seven people were injured, including one minor.
  • All victims of the shooting were bystanders and sustained non-life-threatening injuries from gunshot wounds to their lower bodies; the shooting allegedly followed a dispute at the party. An investigation is ongoing to identify the people involved.
  • The party permit was approved by Waller County Judge Trey Duhon on conditions including stringent security, noise level, sanitation and fire safety requirements. However, none of the security protocols established by the permitting body and agreed upon by the promoter were followed.
  • The security was entrusted to Waller County Precinct 3 Constables and an unknown private security agency. However, there were reports of multiple permit violations, such as illegal parking on private property, people walking on the road and the use of four-wheel vehicles.
  • This incident follows recent episodes of homecoming violence involving historically black colleges and universities. Similar events have occurred at Morgan State University, Edward Waters University in Florida, and Bowie State University in Maryland.
