65-Year-Old Rescued From Soybean Silo in Kenosha County After Multi-Agency Response

Officials credit specialized tactics given the seconds-long risk of fatal grain entrapments.

Overview

  • The Paris Fire Department led the operation after an emergency call around 8 a.m. to a farm on the 3300 block of 169th Avenue in the Town of Paris.
  • Authorities say the man became stuck up to his neck while inspecting an interior auger in a 20-foot silo that was about one-third full.
  • After more than 15 minutes of failed attempts to reach help, he reached a cell signal, contacted family, and they called 911.
  • Crews built an emergency wall, vacuumed soybeans, and used rope and rappelling systems to secure a harness and lift him out at about 9:45 a.m.
  • Eighteen agencies assisted, including the Kenosha County Specialized Rescue Team and Flight for Life, and officials report he was hospitalized with minor injuries and is doing well.
