63-Year-Old Charged With 1991 Murder of Melinda Freeman in Whittlesea

The case now moves to court after a decades-long cold investigation.

Overview

  • A Greensborough man was arrested at his home, interviewed by detectives, charged with murder, and is due in Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.
  • Victoria Police say they will allege the accused was known to Melinda Freeman.
  • Freeman, 27, was found fatally assaulted at her Whittlesea home, which appeared ransacked in what investigators had previously considered a staged burglary.
  • Earlier that day she attended a family reunion, and her husband later returned around 11:30pm to find the front door open and her body on the upstairs landing.
  • The arrest follows renewed efforts that included a $1 million reward announced in 2022 and anonymous information received in 2018.
