6.3 Quake Strikes Northern Afghanistan, Leaving at Least 8 Dead and Nearly 200 Injured

USGS issued an orange PAGER alert signaling high casualty risk in a country with fragile buildings under constrained emergency capacity.

Overview

  • The earthquake struck near Mazar-i-Sharif around 1 a.m. local time at a depth of about 28 kilometers, according to the USGS.
  • Officials now report at least eight fatalities and more than 185 injuries across Balkh and Samangan, even as the USGS PAGER model estimates 100–1,000 possible deaths.
  • Shaking was felt in Kabul and several northern provinces as well as in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, according to Afghan authorities and the USGS.
  • At least five aftershocks followed, the strongest around magnitude 5.2, complicating early damage surveys and rescue efforts.
  • Early images show structural damage in multiple locations, including reported debris at the Blue Mosque complex in Mazar-i-Sharif, while power and telecom outages are slowing access to remote areas.
