Overview

  • A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck at 11:35 a.m. local time off Lima’s coast with its epicenter roughly 24 km west-southwest of Callao at a depth of 49 km.
  • A 36-year-old man was killed when a building wall collapsed in Lima’s Independencia district and five others were treated for quake-related injuries.
  • Landslides and rockfalls along the Costa Verde coastal highway in Miraflores blocked road sections and a dining area roof partially collapsed at Plaza Norte mall.
  • Public transport services including parts of Lima Metro Line 1 were suspended and a professional football match and cathedral mass were halted for safety inspections.
  • The Geophysical Institute of Peru confirmed no tsunami threat and the USGS issued a green alert for low risk of additional fatalities or economic losses.
