6,000-Year-Old Venus of Kolobrzeg Unveiled in Poland

An interdisciplinary team has begun analyzing its fossil-rich limestone surfaces in preparation for a permanent exhibition at the Polish Arms Museum.

Overview

  • A farmer discovered the figurine in December 2022 in a village along the Parseta River near Kolobrzeg.
  • Carved from beige limestone, the statue measures just under 5 inches tall.
  • Its exaggerated hips and breasts with a featureless face align it with Neolithic fertility idols.
  • Fossilized fragments of snail shells, bivalves and marine worms are embedded in the stone.
  • It is the first Neolithic fertility figurine unearthed in Poland and has been hailed as the nation’s “find of the century.”
