60 Students Fall Ill in Two Hyderabad School Food-Poisoning Scares

Authorities are probing a sweet served earlier after supplier meal samples tested normal.

Overview

  • At Government Primary School Chandu Nayak Thanda in Madhapur, 44 of 107 children fell sick after a mid-day meal and were taken to Area Hospital Kondapur or a nearby private hospital.
  • Police said 38 students needed only basic treatment, while six were admitted to a corporate hospital and are expected to be discharged on December 13.
  • The mid-day meal included rice, dal and kesari from an outside agency, and an education official said uneasiness followed the sweet, noting a morning bonda served for a special occasion as a possible factor.
  • In a separate case, 16 students from the Telangana Minority Residential School in Bagh Lingampally were treated at Government Hospital King Koti for vomiting and abdominal symptoms, with one case of moderate dehydration and the rest stable.
  • Recent similar incidents in Jogulamba Gadwal district highlight recurring food-safety concerns across Telangana’s government-run schools as the cause in the latest cases remains under investigation.
