Overview

  • On May 31, around 60 protesters gathered in Mukran on Rügen to voice opposition to the new LNG terminal.
  • The Young Socialists (Jusos) and Fridays for Future led the protest, with Juso leader Philipp Türmer and climate activist Luisa Neubauer joining demonstrators.
  • Protesters accused the government of increasing dependence on fracked gas that they say threatens the Baltic Sea and public health.
  • The Mukran terminal began operations in September 2024 and initially underutilized its two regasification ships, but operator Deutsche Regas now projects higher throughput for 2025.
  • Meanwhile in nearby Prora, the Jusos hosted a coastal camp attracting several hundred participants to combine socialist advocacy with summer seaside events.
