Overview

  • As of August 8, multiagency teams have airlifted over 372 people to safety from the flash-flooded Harsil-Dharali corridor.
  • Four fatalities have been confirmed and 58 individuals, including eight army personnel, remain missing.
  • Blocked and damaged roads have compelled rescuers from the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, ITBP and Uttarakhand Police to depend entirely on helicopters for evacuations and supply drops.
  • The India Meteorological Department has extended warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall through August 13, heightening the risk of further landslides and hampering ground operations.
  • Advanced equipment including ground-penetrating radars and dredging machines is being flown in to expedite searches of debris mounds up to 60 feet high.
