54-Hour Weekend Closure Set for Southbound Mitchell Interchange Lanes

The shutdown lets crews use side-by-side echelon paving to speed work for a smoother surface.

Overview

  • WisDOT will close the southbound I-41/I-94 collector-distributor lanes at the Mitchell Interchange from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Monday.
  • The work zone runs between Layton Avenue and College Avenue and also shuts five ramps, including the Layton on-ramp, WIS 119 on- and off-ramps, the College off-ramp, and the system exit into the collector-distributor.
  • Drivers are urged to detour via the I-94 southbound exit to Layton Avenue, then east on Layton to WIS 38, also known as Howell Avenue.
  • Airport travelers heading southbound should exit at WIS 241 (27th Street), go south to Layton, then south on WIS 38 to reach MKE, while northbound access to the airport remains open.
  • Collector-distributor lanes are side roads that connect the main freeway to ramps, and closing them continuously lets crews place asphalt in one coordinated pass, known as echelon paving, which improves efficiency and ride quality.
