50Hertz Switches On 105-Kilometer 380-kV Line, Lifting Grid Capacity by Up to 40%

The upgrade is meant to move rising renewable output from the north and east to consumers across Germany.

Overview

  • The line runs between Pulgar near Leipzig and Vieselbach near Erfurt, replacing a less capable corridor.
  • The project cost about €235 million, came in below the initial €260 million estimate, and took two and a half years to build.
  • The route largely follows the existing corridor, and dismantling of the old line is expected to finish soon.
  • 50Hertz reports it is building about 900 kilometers of additional grid and plans to invest well over €20 billion by 2028.
  • Initial works have begun on the Suedlink underground cable in southern Thuringia after approval, with the 700-kilometer link expected to carry 4 gigawatts and be completed around the end of 2028.
