500-Acre Wildfire in Maui’s Kahikinui Forces Evacuations

Officials have declared a state of emergency to unlock federal aid for firefighting efforts in Maui’s rugged Kahikinui region.

Overview

  • The blaze ignited June 15 near mile markers 24–25 on Pi‘ilani Highway, quickly consuming 500 acres by that evening under strong winds.
  • Crews report 80% containment as of June 16 with no injuries or structural damage.
