5 Million Above-Ground Pools Recalled Over Design Flaw Linked to Child Drownings

Officials warn external compression straps on pools taller than 48 inches can act as footholds that lead toddlers into the water unattended.

A child is seen attempting to get into a pool in this photo provided by Health Canada about a recall involving select Bestway, Intext and Polygroup above-ground pools.
This image shows the different types of Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup pools that have been recalled and those that are not included in the recall.

Overview

  • About five million above-ground pools 48 inches or taller sold since 2002 by Bestway, Coleman, Intex and Polygroup are included in the recall.
  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says external compression straps on pool exteriors may create footholds that enable children under three to climb into the water unsupervised.
  • Nine children under age three drowned between 2007 and 2022 after gaining access to recalled pools via the compression straps.
  • Consumers can request free repair kits from Bestway, Intex or Polygroup and are advised to secure or drain affected pools until the replacement ropes are installed.
  • The recall follows the finalization of updated safety standards in May and represents a coordinated effort by the CPSC and manufacturers to eliminate the climbing hazard.
