44 Bison Released Near Cuatro Ciénegas, Establishing Mexico’s Third Conservation Herd

The reintroduction seeks to revive desert grasslands by harnessing the bison’s ecosystem‑engineering role.

Overview

  • Project partners released 38 females and 6 males on November 26 into the El Santuario ecological reserve in Coahuila.
  • Most animals came from Rancho El Uno in the Janos Biosphere Reserve, with three donated by the Museo del Desierto.
  • Fundación Pro Cuatro Ciénegas led the effort with support from the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature, Cuenca Los Ojos, CONANP and state environmental authorities.
  • The herd is expected to aid soil regeneration, improve rainwater infiltration and lower wildfire risk by consuming dry grasses.
  • Organizers highlighted cultural ties as the Nación N’dé welcomed the animals in a traditional ceremony near the nearly 4,000‑hectare site.
