4.2-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes El Bierzo With No Reported Damage

The national seismology institute moved the epicentre to Benuza after a routine data revision.

Overview

  • The Instituto Geográfico Nacional recorded a tremor at 22:34 on Thursday that was first reported as magnitude 4.0 with a 10 km depth and later revised to magnitude 4.2 with its epicentre placed at the surface in Benuza.
  • The agency logged several aftershocks in the hour after the main shock, seven of them with magnitudes between 1.3 and 2.4 and some recorded at or very near the surface, which made the sequence more noticeable to residents.
  • The quake and its aftershocks were felt across many towns in El Bierzo and reached parts of Galicia and Asturias, including reports from O Barco de Valdeorras, Lugo and Ourense municipalities.
  • Regional emergency services and civil-protection officials, including the Junta de Castilla y León, 1-1-2 and Axega, answered multiple calls, inspected reports and stated there are no injuries or material damage at this time.
  • Data revisions like the IGN's are a routine part of seismic monitoring and officials say they will continue to track aftershocks and update the public if conditions change.
