41 Pro-Kannada Activists Remanded After Disruption of Hindi Promotion Meet in Bengaluru

The arrests follow a Karnataka Rakshana Vedike protest against a central language review they argue imposes Hindi.

Overview

  • Police said 30–40 Karnataka Rakshana Vedike members entered the Taj West End on September 25 during a three-day Parliamentary Committee on Official Language review, briefly halting proceedings.
  • The meeting, organised by the Home Ministry’s Rajbhasha Samiti and attended by six MPs, resumed soon after the disruption and concluded as scheduled.
  • Forty-one protesters were arrested, produced before the 1st ACJM Court in Bengaluru, and remanded to judicial custody after a case was registered at High Grounds police station.
  • A complaint by a central government official alleged the group posed as customers, tore Hindi banners, smashed items, and threatened officials, leading to charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • KRV leaders defended the action, demanded abolition of the Official Language Committee, and warned of wider statewide protests if cases against activists proceed.
