37 Dead, Dozens Injured in Bolivia Bus Collision

Two buses collided on a rural highway near Uyuni, with one driver suspected of alcohol consumption.

The crash occurred early Saturday on a two-way road near Uyuni in the Potosi region, killing 37 people and injuring 41 others.
Among the deceased were four minors and two foreign nationals: an 80-year-old Peruvian woman and a three-year-old German girl.
One of the buses was en route to Oruro for a major carnival celebration, while the other was traveling between Uyuni and Colchani.
Preliminary investigations suggest one bus veered into the opposite lane, and one driver, who survived, showed signs of alcohol consumption.
Bolivia's mountainous roads are among the world's deadliest, with an annual average of 1,400 fatalities from road accidents.
