3.6‑Magnitude Quake Registered Off Huacho; No Damage Reported

Posing no immediate damage, the event highlights active monitoring as experts cite accumulated seismic energy on Peru’s central coast.

Overview

  • The Instituto Geofísico del Perú recorded a magnitude 3.6 quake 37 km west of Huacho at 2:37 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, with a depth of 48 km and epicenter coordinates of -11.11, -77.94.
  • The tremor was felt weakly as Mercalli intensity II in Huacho and local authorities reported no material damage or casualties.
  • The IGP published technical bulletin IGP/CENSIS/RS 2026-0735 and posted the alert on its X account while continuing to log other small quakes in the region in the same period.
  • Sismologist César Jiménez Tintaya warned that the central coast has accumulated seismic energy since the 1746 megathrust event and said past earthquakes have released only about 20% of that energy, leaving the potential for a much larger quake in the long term.
  • Civil defense agencies including INDECI urged residents to stay calm, keep an emergency kit ready, identify safe zones at home and work, and save emergency numbers (Bomberos 116, Policía 105, SAMU 106).
