Overview
- The Instituto Geofísico del Perú’s CENSIS bulletin IGP/CENSIS/RS 2026-0735 records a magnitude 3.6 quake at 14:37 on Oct. 15 with epicenter 37 km west of Huacho at coordinates −11.11, −77.94 and a depth of 48 km.
- Local reports say the movement was felt weakly at intensity II on the Modified Mercalli scale in Huacho and that authorities have reported no damage or casualties.
- The event is one of several small quakes the IGP has logged in mid‑October across regions such as Huánuco, Junín, Pasco, Arequipa and Lima and is under continuous monitoring by national seismological services.
- Sismologist César Jiménez Tintaya warned that the central coast has long‑term accumulated seismic energy dating back to the 1746 megathrust quake and that scientists discuss, as a long‑term possibility, a much larger event in the magnitude 8.5–8.8 range, not an imminent prediction.
- Civil‑defense agencies including INDECI are urging simple preparedness steps such as keeping an emergency kit, identifying safe zones at home, and having a family plan so communities can respond quickly if a stronger quake occurs.
