Overview
- Zion Carr, who was eight years old when he witnessed his aunt, Atatiana Jefferson, being fatally shot by a police officer in their home, has been awarded a $3.5 million settlement by the Fort Worth City Council.
- The officer, Aaron Dean, was responding to a nonemergency call from a neighbor who reported that the front door to Jefferson's home was open late at night.
- Dean, who did not identify himself as a police officer, shot Jefferson through a window after she took out her gun, believing there was an intruder in the backyard.
- Dean was later convicted of manslaughter in Jefferson’s death and sentenced to nearly 12 years in prison.
- Part of the settlement will cover Zion’s current needs and living expenses, and a savings plan will be established to pay for his college education.
